Keeps the screen from cracking when the phone is mishandled.

it does not seem to stick on the boundary 0.5 cm (perhaps because the glass is 3d, i'm not sure). also it is 0.5 cm smaller on the sides than the phone screen. so i shall yet to see how long it stays on the screen and how much it can guard the edges of the screen.
